#7: Raley's

a.) It's not that pricey.

b.) It wasn't crowded.

c.) Quality produce.

d.) Conveniently located on my way back from work.

e.) 5 cent refund for each bag of your own that you bring in instead of using plastic bags. No more Wal-Mart scanners accusing me of stealing!

#6: CA Academy of Sciences

LEED certified! I got queasy around the time I saw the penguins.

I caught up with Roy in San Francisco and he knew right where to go for some quality learning.

#5: Tri-tip

From the barbecue trailer next to work:

Mine came out like a po boy, but I guess we'll just call it a tri-tip sandwich. I believed that this was just something Greg made up until the Sasquatch festival when there was a separate reference made to this cut of beef.

#3 P. Wexford's

This is the Modesto version of Pat's: beer on tap, banjos + guitars weekly, laid back atmosphere. Plus the food is good! Caught up with some folks here on Friday night. I'll be returning...

#2: Razor Wire

I looked at an apartment yesterday that smelled like a smoker threw up in there. The AC unit was buried beneath a film of muck. There was no fridge or stove. I'm not sure that the bathroom is finished.

This was the first time I'd looked at a place that was covered in razor wire. I think I'll keep looking.

#1: Happy Garden

Today's discovery needs a little backstory: back when Greg would make trips for Thrivent down to El Salvador/Mexico etc. I would be recruited to dog sit. Chloe and I have shared a tradition of watching a movie together after sushi on the first night that Greg is gone. Even though this is more for me than her, she seems to dig it.

Since Kentucky decided to have ice storms and since Greg is on call for storm duty, Chloe and I revisited this tradition last night.

This brings me to my first discovery: Happy Garden. I've haven't been within walking distance to sushi since college. Though this time I have to fork over cash instead of the "free" flex points, I'm satisfied.
